The Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Aneke, has warned that any member of the Armed Forces of Nigeria found plotting or attempting to overthrow the country’s democratic government will face strict legal consequences.
Speaking on Wednesday during a strategic meeting with commanders at the Nigerian Air Force Headquarters in Abuja, Aneke strongly condemned the reported coup plot against President Bola Tinubu’s administration, describing it as “shameful, shocking, and wholly reprehensible.”
He stressed that the primary responsibility of the military is to support and uphold civil authority, not undermine it.
Reports indicate that more than 40 military personnel and civilians have been arrested in connection with the alleged coup attempt planned for October last year, while families of some of those detained have appealed for leniency and fair trials.
Before the meeting moved into a closed-door session, the Air Chief reaffirmed the Nigerian Air Force’s loyalty to the Constitution and the democratically elected government.
“I unequivocally condemn recent revelations that certain individuals planned to subvert democracy and seize power by force,” he said. “Such actions are unacceptable, and those responsible will face the full weight of the law.”
He also reminded commanders of their duty to maintain unity within the ranks and to take firm action against indiscipline and unlawful conduct.
