A deadly bandit attack in Wanka community, Keram district, Kanam LGA, Plateau State, claimed at least 10 lives on Friday evening, including 3 security operatives and 7 vigilantes.
Eye witnesses reported that the attack began around 6:30 pm, when a large number of bandits invaded the village and began shooting sporadically. Residents confirmed that security forces engaged the bandits, resulting in several casualties among the attackers.
Local resident Gambo Musa said, “We have lived in fear of bandit attacks for a long time. Security personnel entered the community on Friday morning, fought with the bandits, and killed several while others fled.”
Hours later, the bandits regrouped from nearby bushes, attacking again, leading to further casualties on both sides. Another resident, Ibrahim Ubale, described the assault as severe, noting the attackers were heavily armed and able to confront both security personnel and vigilantes.
Although the exact number of affected residents is still unclear, reports indicate that many bandits were also killed during the clash.
At press time, Captain Polycap Oteh, spokesperson for Operation Enduring Peace, was unavailable for comment.
