Borno Youth Parliament Pushes for Girl-Child Education

The Borno State Youth Parliament has successfully held its 5th Official Sitting at the Chamber of the Borno State House of Assembly. The sitting was presided over by the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Abubakar Usman. The major highlight was a motion calling for urgent support for adolescent girl-child students. The motion was presented by Hon. Khadija Isa, representing Bayo Constituency.

The motion seeks to address challenges affecting girls’ education in Borno State. It advocates for policies and interventions that will improve access to quality education, safety, and overall well-being. The motion was co-sponsored by members representing Biu and Magumeri Constituencies.

The motion generated robust debate with contributions from members representing Damboa, Chibok, Kukawa, Gwoza, Shani, Hawul, Jere, and Konduga Constituencies. Members unanimously emphasized the need for collective action to safeguard the future of the girl child in Borno State.

The sitting was attended by distinguished government officials and stakeholders. These included Hon. Zuwaira Gambo, Commissioner for Women Affairs, and Hon. Aliyu Lawan Buba Bamanga, Commissioner for Transport and Energy. Also present were Hon. Joseph Nuhu Clark, Executive Vice Chairman of Chibok LGA, and Mr. Abubakar Abdullahi Sulaiman, Executive Director of the Network for Civil Society Organisations.

Other attendees included Abubakar Sadiq Muazu (CATAI), Mrs. Aishatu Alhaji Kabu (ZECGAWIS), Amb. Alhaji Adamu Mai Buhu, and Amb. Abbatcha Umar Nanabe (PCRC Chairman). Engr. Shehu represented the Speaker of the Nigerian Youth Parliament. Also in attendance were youth leaders, student leaders, and civil society representatives.

At the close of proceedings, the Leader of the House, Amb. Talha Musa Magumeri, moved a motion for the House to adjourn sine die. The motion was duly adopted by the Parliament.

The 5th Official Sitting reaffirmed the Borno State Youth Parliament’s commitment to championing policies that promote youth development, gender equality, and inclusive governance. The Parliament issued a strong call for swift intervention by government, development partners, and all relevant stakeholders to support adolescent girl-child education. The goal is to ensure that every girl has the opportunity to learn, thrive, and contribute meaningfully to the development of Borno State.
