DigitalOcean has announced the public preview release of its highly anticipated Private Droplets feature, offering users enhanced security and network isolation for their cloud infrastructure.
According to the company, Private Droplets allow developers to create virtual machines without default public internet access, ensuring that all compute resources operate strictly within a Virtual Private Cloud (VPC). This significantly reduces exposure to external threats.
The new feature introduces improved security by enabling communication exclusively through internal VPC networks, eliminating the need for traditional firewall configurations. It also supports private DNS and endpoints, allowing seamless access to services such as Spaces and serverless tools within a secure environment.
DigitalOcean noted that Private Droplets can still access the internet through a configured NAT Gateway, ensuring controlled outbound connectivity when required. Additionally, the feature supports automatic VPC peering, enhancing connectivity between different private networks.
Private Droplets are now available to all users via the company’s API and CLI tools. To create one, users must disable the public interface during setup. The company clarified that existing Droplets cannot be converted, and new instances must be created to use the feature.
The service is priced the same as standard Droplets and is available across all DigitalOcean regions.
The launch marks a significant step in strengthening cloud security and flexibility, as DigitalOcean continues to expand its infrastructure offerings based on customer demand.
