Nigeria’s Ambassador-designate to Germany, Femi Fani-Kayode, has said that it would be unacceptable for former presidential candidate Peter Obi to become the President of Nigeria.
Fani-Kayode made the remark during an interview with Nigeria Today News Network, where he stated that he strongly opposes the possibility of Obi leading the country.
“I look at someone like Peter Obi… God forbid Peter Obi should be President of this country. I won’t go into why I said that, but God forbid,” he said.
The former Minister of Aviation also advised former Vice President Atiku Abubakar to reconsider his continued presidential ambition, suggesting that it may be time for him to allow others to pursue the office.
“I have respect for our former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, but I also believe that it’s time for him to simply say, ‘let others continue the work,’” he added.
Speaking on Nigeria’s political landscape, Fani-Kayode argued that the country currently lacks a strong opposition, claiming that opposition parties have largely collapsed.
He specifically criticized the African Democratic Congress (ADC), describing it as a group of politicians desperate for power rather than a party with a clear vision for Nigeria.
“I don’t see ADC as an opposition party. I see them as an association of people desperate for power — individuals who are discredited and have no real hope of moving this nation forward,” he said.
Fani-Kayode also compared the current opposition with the former strength of the All Progressives Congress (APC) when it was in opposition, saying the party was more organized and effective in challenging the then-ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
“Can you compare the APC that was in opposition to the jokers we have today that call themselves opposition?” he asked.
