Jigawa Judicial Commission Forces Shari’a Court Judge Into Retirement Over Corruption

The Jigawa State Judicial Service Commission (JSC) has approved the compulsory retirement of a Shari’a court judge, Sadisu Muhammad Haruna, after he was found guilty of misconduct involving extortion and unlawful detention.

The commission’s Director of Protocol and Publicity, Abba Wangara, disclosed this in a statement issued on Tuesday in Dutse, the capital of Jigawa State.

According to the statement, the decision was taken after the commission carefully reviewed a petition and the supporting evidence presented against the judge during a meeting held in Dutse.

Mr. Wangara explained that the disciplinary action followed a complaint filed by Abdullahi Hamza. The investigation found that the judge demanded and collected fees from the petitioner that were not recognised under the Jigawa Shari’a Court Civil Procedure Rules (2012).

The commission said the judge’s actions amounted to extortion and also involved the illegal detention of the petitioner, describing the conduct as a serious breach of judicial ethics and abuse of office.

“The act of demanding unlawful charges and detaining the petitioner illegally is a clear violation of judicial standards and unacceptable behaviour for a judicial officer,” the statement said.

The commission stated that the compulsory retirement of the judge serves as a strong warning that corruption or abuse of authority within the judiciary will not be tolerated.

In addition to the disciplinary action, the commission also approved the promotion of more than 80 staff members across different departments as part of efforts to boost morale and reward dedication to service.

Several senior officers were also appointed to key positions within the Jigawa State Shari’a Court of Appeal. These include Aliyu Muhammad as Deputy Chief Registrar I (Administration), Abdulrashid Alhassan as Deputy Chief Registrar II (Litigation), and Isma’il Sani as Chief Inspector of Shari’a Courts.

Other appointments include Umar Malam as Director of Planning, Research and Statistics, Muhammad Lawan as Director of Personnel Management, and Kabiru Isyaku as Deputy Chief Inspector.

The commission reaffirmed its commitment to sanitising the judicial system and ensuring that all judicial officers carry out their duties in accordance with the law and established ethical standards.
