Mixed Reactions Follow CAF Verdict on AFCON 2025 Final

The decision by the Confederation of African Football to award Morocco a 3–0 victory over Senegal in the Africa Cup of Nations 2025 final has sparked widespread debate across the football world.

The ruling, announced by CAF’s Appeal Board on Tuesday, overturned Senegal’s 1–0 extra-time victory recorded during the final played in Rabat. The match took place at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium.

Why CAF Overturned the Result

CAF ruled that Senegal forfeited the match under Article 84 of its regulations after Senegalese players briefly walked off the pitch in protest following a penalty awarded to Morocco late in regulation time.

While the governing body insists the decision followed proper procedures, many football observers argue that it undermines the principle that results should be determined on the field of play.

Players and Fans React

Senegal captain Sadio Mané responded to the verdict with a brief message on social media:

“The world knows the true champions.”

The comment quickly went viral, with many supporters insisting that Senegal earned the victory fairly, especially after returning to the pitch and winning the match in extra time through a decisive goal from Pape Gueye.

Journalists and Experts Criticise Decision

Several football analysts and journalists strongly criticised CAF’s ruling.

Sports journalist Calvin Onwuka described the decision as “ridiculous”, suggesting Senegal should even consider withdrawing from CAF if the verdict stands.

Veteran sports journalist Colin Udoh also condemned the ruling, calling it “disgraceful.” He argued that Senegal had not abandoned the match completely.

According to him, CAF regulations refer to a team leaving the ground entirely, not merely stepping off the pitch temporarily. He pointed out that the match continued under the referee’s authority and ended with a legitimate result.

Legal analyst and journalist Osasu Obayiuwana also expressed shock at the ruling, questioning whether the Appeal Board had the authority to overturn a completed match result.

Internal Disagreement Within CAF

The controversy appears to have reached CAF itself. Executive Committee member Samir Sobha reportedly described the ruling as “a big joke,” warning that replacing one injustice with another could damage the credibility of African football.

The government of Senegal has also rejected the decision, describing it as an “unjustified dispossession.” Officials in Dakar have indicated that they may challenge the ruling at the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

Authorities have also called for an independent investigation into the circumstances surrounding the decision.

Some Defend CAF’s Decision

Despite the backlash, some football administrators and analysts have defended CAF’s stance, arguing that rules must be enforced regardless of circumstances.

Football administrator Olawale Quadri said Senegal’s actions violated the regulations and left CAF with little choice but to apply sanctions.

Similarly, analyst Olawale Adigun suggested the controversy is largely due to the timing of the decision rather than the rule itself.

Former Super Falcons media officer Harry Awurumibe also supported the verdict, stating that any team that breaches football regulations must face the consequences.

Debate Over True Champions Continues

Beyond legal arguments, some observers say administrative rulings cannot erase the emotional reality of a football victory.

Journalist Deji Omotoyinbo noted that football championships are remembered through the celebrations, fans, and national pride experienced on the field, which cannot easily be replaced by decisions made after the match.

For now, CAF officially recognises Morocco as the AFCON 2025 champions. However, across Africa and the global football community, the debate over who truly deserved the title continues to divide opinions.
