Reps Consider Bill to Establish Federal University of Animal Health and Production Technology: A Step Toward Food Security and Veterinary Advancement

In a move that signals a progressive step toward strengthening Nigeria’s agricultural and veterinary education, the Federal University of Animal Health and Production Technology (Establishment) Bill, 2025, sponsored by Rt. Hon. Ahmed Idris, was formally introduced during Thursday’s plenary at the House of Representatives.

The proposed institution, if passed into law, will become a specialized hub for research, training, and innovation in animal health, livestock production, and food security technologies—key sectors of Nigeria’s economy that are vital for rural livelihoods, nutrition, and export diversification.

The bill was among several key legislative items featured on the Order Paper for May 15, 2025, as presented by House Spokesman, Rep. Akin Rotimi Jr. Other items included multiple education-related amendments, motions on national security, and institutional reforms.

Speaking on the broader significance of the bill, experts say the university will help close the gap in skilled manpower within the livestock and veterinary sectors while also boosting Nigeria’s capacity to tackle recurring challenges such as animal diseases, poor yields, and food scarcity.

Stakeholders across the agricultural and academic sectors have lauded the initiative as timely and impactful, aligning with the federal government’s drive toward economic diversification through agriculture and innovation.

The bill now awaits subsequent readings and committee reviews as part of the legislative process.
