Nigeria’s Minister of Defence, Gen. Christopher Musa (Rtd), has summoned the country’s Service Chiefs to an urgent meeting following a series of recent attacks on military bases in the North East.
The high level meeting, currently taking place at the Ministry of Defence Headquarters in Abuja, is aimed at reviewing the security situation and strengthening strategies to tackle growing terrorist threats in the region.
Those attending the meeting include the Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Olufemi Oluyede; Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Waidi Shaibu, Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Aneke, and Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Idi Abass. Representatives from the National Intelligence Agency (NIA) are also present.
The meeting comes amid growing concerns over recent deadly attacks by terrorists, particularly in Borno State, where several military formations were targeted.
According to reports, at least three Commanding Officers holding the rank of Lieutenant Colonel were recently killed during the attacks. In addition to the senior officers, many soldiers lost their lives, while hundreds of civilians were reportedly abducted and remain in captivity.
Speaking briefly before the meeting went into a closed door session, the Defence Minister said the gathering would focus on reviewing existing military strategies to intensify the fight against terrorism.
He acknowledged that the military had suffered some casualties but insisted that terrorist groups had recorded greater losses during the confrontations.
The emergency meeting is expected to produce new measures aimed at strengthening military operations and improving security across the North East region.
