North Korea opens new housing area for families of soldiers killed overseas

Leader of North Korea, Kim Jong Un, has unveiled a newly built residential street designed for families of soldiers who died in combat, according to state media reports.

The homes are said to be for families of soldiers who were killed while fighting in Russia’s war against Ukraine. Intelligence agencies in South Korea and several Western countries have reported that Pyongyang deployed thousands of troops to support Russia, with Seoul estimating around 2,000 casualties among them.

Experts believe North Korea receives financial assistance, military technology, and essential supplies from Moscow in exchange for its support.

State media outlet Korean Central News Agency released photos showing Kim touring the new housing complex on Saeppyol Street in Pyongyang, accompanied by his daughter Ju Ae, who is widely seen as his likely successor.

South Korea’s intelligence agency has reportedly described Ju Ae as being designated a successor, citing her frequent public appearances alongside her father at major national events.

In remarks released by KCNA, Kim said the new street reflects the country’s desire to honor soldiers who sacrificed their lives and ensure their families live in comfort and dignity.

Although the announcement did not directly mention Russia, Kim has recently pledged to fully support all decisions made by Russian President Vladimir Putin.

The housing project was unveiled ahead of the upcoming congress of the ruling Workers’ Party of Korea — the country’s most important political gathering. Observers are watching closely for signals on future domestic and foreign policy, as well as whether Ju Ae will be granted any formal political role.

Analyst Hong Min of the Korea Institute for National Unification told Agence France-Presse that the timing of the housing unveiling appears to be politically strategic.

He said the move visually demonstrates the state providing tangible support to families of fallen soldiers — a symbolic gesture that may help justify troop deployment ahead of the party congress.
