The Northern Governors Forum (NGF) has thrown its weight behind the creation of state police, calling on the National Assembly to fast-track the legislative process required to establish the framework for its implementation.
This was contained in a communiqué issued at the end of the Forum’s meeting held on Saturday, 10 May 2025, and read by the Chairman of the Forum and Governor of Gombe State, Alhaji Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya.
According to Governor Yahaya, the Forum resolved to fully support the establishment of state police as a strategic step towards curbing growing security threats across the country. “The Forum resolved to support the creation of state police and called on the National Assembly to expedite action on the enactment of the legal framework for its take-off,” he stated.
In addition, the Forum resolved to enhance inter-state border surveillance as part of renewed efforts to combat insurgency, banditry, and other forms of criminal activities more effectively.
The Forum expressed appreciation to the Federal Government for its efforts in addressing security challenges and infrastructural deficits in the region. It also pledged stronger synergy with the Nigeria Governors’ Forum to strengthen collective action against insecurity.
The meeting was attended by the 19 Northern State Governors as well as the Chairmen of State Traditional Councils.
