The Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) has imposed heavy sanctions on Wikki Tourists following serious breaches of league rules during their match against Katsina United last Sunday.
The league found the Bauchi-based club guilty of multiple security and conduct violations, including failure to provide adequate protection at the stadium. This lapse allowed unauthorised individuals to access restricted areas meant for players and officials, undermining match safety and integrity.
According to the NPFL, the situation worsened as Wikki supporters engaged in unruly behaviour, including throwing stones onto the pitch, which endangered Katsina United players and match officials. The club was also held responsible for failing to control its fans, resulting in harassment, loss of personal belongings, and injuries to match officials and an official of the visiting team.
Financial penalties and sanctions
The league imposed several fines, including:
- ₦2 million for inadequate security arrangements.
- ₦1.5 million to cover compensation and medical expenses, including the referee’s lost whistle and treatment for injured officials.
- ₦1 million for unsporting conduct capable of bringing the game into disrepute.
- ₦1 million for throwing dangerous objects onto the pitch.
- ₦2 million for detaining match officials and the away team for hours after the game and causing an 18-minute delay before play resumed.
In addition to the financial penalties, the NPFL ordered Wikki Tourists to stop using their Bauchi home ground indefinitely. All future home matches will now be played at the Jos Stadium.
The club has been given 48 hours from the date of notification to appeal the decision.
The NPFL said the sanctions reflect its commitment to enforcing discipline, improving matchday security, and addressing growing concerns over fan behaviour and safety in Nigerian football.
