The Nigeria Police on Thursday arraigned four brothers and two other individuals before the Iyaganku Magistrates’ Court in Ibadan, Oyo State, over alleged impersonation on social media.
The four brothers are Isaac Adeaga, 27; John Adeaga, 21; Tomiwa Adeaga, 26; and Samuel Adeaga, 27. The other defendants are Ridwan Adisa, 22, and Kehinde Popoola, 30. All six pleaded not guilty to the charges.
Prosecutor Olagoke Adegbenro, an Assistant Superintendent of Police, told the court that the alleged offence occurred on 25 January 2025 at about 10:20 a.m. in the Ayegun Oleyo area of Ibadan.
He accused the defendants of posing as white women based in the United States on Facebook, Gmail, and TikTok with intent to defraud unsuspecting victims. According to the prosecution, they also used foreign phone numbers in carrying out the alleged fraud.
The prosecutor said the offence violates Section 484 of the Criminal Laws of Oyo State, 2000.
Magistrate Olasinmibo Sanusi granted each defendant bail in the sum of N2 million, with two sureties in like sum. She ruled that one surety must be a parent of the defendant, while the second must be a civil servant not below Level 10 and provide proof of land ownership.
The case was adjourned until 10 March for further hearing.
