In a groundbreaking move, President Bola Tinubu has given the green light for the complete implementation of the Oronsaye report, leading to the merging, scrapping, and relocation of several government agencies, as reported by Dailytrust.
The comprehensive 800-page report, submitted in 2012 as part of public sector reforms, recommended significant changes, including the reduction of 263 statutory agencies to 161, scrapping 38 agencies, merging 52, and reverting 14 to departments in various ministries.
The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, made the announcement after Monday’s Federal Executive Council meeting in Abuja, stating, “So in a very bold move today, this administration, under the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, consistent again with his courage to take very far-reaching decisions in the interest of Nigeria, has taken a decision to implement the so-called Oronsaye Report.”
Idris further explained that the government has scrapped, modified, marked, subsumed, and relocated various agencies, commissions, and departments to enhance operational efficiency.
To oversee the swift execution of these changes, President Tinubu constituted a committee headed by Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Policy Coordination, Mrs. Hadiza Bala-Usman. The committee is tasked with implementing mergers, scrappings, and relocations within a 12-week timeframe.
The Oronsaye report, initiated in 2011 under the leadership of former Head of Civil Service, Stephen Oronsaye, revealed a staggering total of 541 federal government parastatals, commissions, and agencies, both statutory and non-statutory.
Among its recommendations, the report proposes repealing the law establishing the National Salaries and Wages Commission, with its functions transferred to the Revenue Mobilisation and Fiscal Responsibility Commission. It also suggests merging the nation’s top three anti-corruption agencies – the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, the Independent Corrupt Practices and other Related Offences Commission, and the Code of Conduct Bureau.
President Tinubu’s decisive move aligns with the government’s commitment to streamline and enhance the efficiency of its agencies, marking a significant step toward public sector optimization.
