At least five people have lost their lives and thirteen others sustained injuries following a fatal road accident at Zangzat Roundabout in Langtang North Local Government Area of Plateau State.
The crash occurred at about 3:00 a.m. on Sunday and involved a trailer conveying paddy rice alongside passengers traveling from Shendam Local Government Area to Jos.
Confirming the incident, the Executive Chairman of Langtang North LGA, Hon. Pirfa Jingfa Tyem, described the development as tragic. In a statement signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Kum Precious Yakubu, the chairman said he received the report with deep concern.
According to preliminary findings, the accident involved a Plateau State–registered trailer with registration number JJN 383 YZ. The crash was reportedly caused by excessive speeding and overloading, leading to the death of five persons, while about thirteen others suffered varying degrees of injuries. The injured victims are currently receiving treatment at the General Hospital, Langtang.
Following the incident, the chairman immediately directed a team from the Local Government Council to visit both the accident scene and the hospital to assess the situation, sympathise with the victims, and determine their urgent needs.
Hon. Tyem extended heartfelt condolences to the families of those who lost their lives and prayed for the quick and full recovery of the injured.
The Langtang North Local Government Council also used the opportunity to caution drivers, transporters, marketers, and commuters to strictly observe speed limits, avoid overloading, and always prioritise safety to prevent avoidable loss of lives on the roads.
