U.S. Supreme Court Considers Republican Challenge to Mail-In Voting Law

The Supreme Court of the United States on Monday heard arguments in a case that could reshape mail-in voting rules across the country.

The dispute centers on a law in Mississippi that allows mail-in ballots to be counted if they are postmarked on or before Election Day but received up to five business days afterward. The case was brought by the Republican National Committee and other Republican groups, who argue that federal law requires ballots to be received by Election Day.

The administration of Donald Trump supports the challenge, saying the law conflicts with federal election statutes that set a single day for federal elections.

Mississippi officials, however, argue that states have the authority to manage their election procedures, including deadlines for receiving mail-in ballots. They say the grace period helps ensure that ballots sent on time are still counted.

During the hearing, several conservative justices questioned how ballots delivered by mail should be treated and whether late-arriving ballots could affect public confidence in election results.

Justice Neil Gorsuch raised concerns about when a ballot should be considered officially delivered, while Justice Samuel Alito asked whether ballots arriving after Election Day could undermine trust in elections.

On the other hand, Justice Elena Kagan suggested that federal law may allow states flexibility in setting ballot-receipt deadlines.

The case follows a ruling by the United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit that sided with the Republican challengers. That decision could affect voting practices not only in Mississippi but also in other states that allow mail-in ballots to arrive after Election Day.

The Supreme Court’s final ruling could determine whether states can continue counting ballots received after Election Day or must enforce stricter deadlines nationwide. 🗳️
