UK Tightens Security, Ahead of Tinubu’s Visit to King Charles

The United Kingdom has announced temporary restrictions on its airspace and road movement ahead of a high level visit by Nigeria’s President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, to meet King Charles III at Windsor Castle.

The visit, scheduled for March 18–19, is expected to attract heightened security across the historic town of Windsor and is being described as one of the most significant diplomatic engagements hosted by the British monarchy in recent times.

According to the Thames Valley Police, security measures will include expanded restrictions on the airspace surrounding Windsor Castle as well as additional controls on road movement during the visit.

Authorities said the existing permanent airspace restriction over Windsor will be temporarily extended on March 18 from 7:00 to 23:59 GMT. The decision was made in coordination with the Civil Aviation Authority to ensure enhanced security during the state visit.

Chief Superintendent Adrian Hall, who leads the joint operations unit of Thames Valley Police, said the airspace restrictions form part of a broader security operation designed to ensure the safety of the visiting dignitaries and the public.

“The air restrictions are just one part of our robust security operation for the state visit of Nigerian President Tinubu next week, with many measures you will see and others you will not,” Hall said.

He warned that anyone who violates the temporary airspace restriction could face arrest under the Air Navigation Order, as the police will strictly enforce the rules throughout the event.

To support the security operation, a large number of officers with specialised capabilities will be deployed across Windsor. These include search teams, armed police units, mounted officers, and road policing teams.

Hall added that the force has extensive experience managing security during royal events in Windsor and that significant planning has gone into ensuring the success of the visit.

“We will ensure everyone attending the state visit, including dignitaries and spectators, as well as the public, are kept safe to enjoy this historic occasion,” he said.

The visit is expected to highlight diplomatic relations between Nigeria and the United Kingdom while drawing global attention to Windsor during the two day engagement.
