Zulum Inaugurates 48-Classroom Integrated Islamic College in Baga

Baga, Kukawa LGA Borno State Governor, Prof. Babagana Umara Zulum, has inaugurated a new 48-classroom Integrated Learning High Islamic College in Baga town, Kukawa Local Government Area, as part of efforts to reform the almajiri system and improve access to quality education.

The college is designed to give a second chance to almajirai and other out-of-school children, integrating formal academic subjects such as English and Mathematics with traditional Islamic studies and vocational training.

Speaking during the inauguration on Friday, Governor Zulum described the initiative as a bold step in tackling illiteracy and insecurity in the state.

We will ensure they get quality education that qualifies them to sit for the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) examination and gain admission into tertiary institutions in Nigeria, Zulum assured.

The governor also announced a free daily meal programme to help retain students in school, noting that initial enrollment figures showed strong community interest in the project.

The Baga Integrated College is one of about 20 such schools established by the Borno State Government under its education reform plan. These colleges combine western education with Qur’anic learning and practical skills, aimed at mainstreaming almajirai into the modern school system.

Commissioner for Education, Science, Technology and Innovation, Engr. Lawan Abba Wakilbe, explained that the government has already provided free uniforms, books, and other learning materials to enrolled students.

He further disclosed that the teaching staff includes 23 community-based teachers recruited from Baga, while the principal was promoted from the Local Education Authority in Kukawa.

Zulum stressed that investment in integrated education is central to addressing the root causes of insecurity, poverty, and unemployment in the North-East.

With proper education and skills, our children will have a brighter future, and society will become safer and more productive, he said.

The inauguration in Baga marks another milestone in the administration’s broader push to rebuild communities affected by insurgency and restore hope to displaced populations across Borno State. Of
