Kano Police Arrest Two Over Phone Scam, Recover 28 SIM Cards

The Kano State Police Command has uncovered a fraud syndicate that allegedly impersonates spirits, commonly referred to as “Aljannu,” to deceive and extort members of the public through phone calls.

The suspects, identified as Ahmad Ibrahim (24) and Isma’il Muhammad (22), both residents of Dandinshe Quarters in Dala LGA, were arrested on April 10, 2026, by operatives of the Command’s Anti-Kidnapping Squad following credible intelligence.

According to police findings, the suspects used multiple GSM lines and voice modulation techniques to disguise their voices as spirits, instilling fear in victims and instructing them to perform certain recitations while demanding money under threats of misfortune.

During interrogation, the suspects reportedly confessed to defrauding over 500 victims using the scheme. A total of 28 SIM cards linked to the operation were recovered from them.

The Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, commended the operatives for their swift action and warned that criminals are increasingly exploiting people’s beliefs for financial gain.

Police say investigations are ongoing, with efforts underway to arrest other members of the syndicate.

The command has also advised residents to be cautious of suspicious calls, warning that no legitimate spiritual or religious authority would demand money or issue threats via phone. Citizens are urged to report such incidents to the nearest police station or through official emergency lines.
