Mutfwang: Plateau Will Remain Safe Haven Despite Renewed Attacks

Governor Caleb Mutfwang has assured that Plateau State will continue to serve as a refuge for law-abiding Nigerians displaced by violence, even as fresh attacks and kidnappings persist in parts of the state.

Speaking during a church service in Jos, the governor—through his spokesperson Gyang Bere—reaffirmed the state’s commitment to providing safety, particularly for those fleeing crises in the North East. He also expressed optimism about the restoration of peace across Plateau, the Middle Belt, and the country at large.

His remarks come amid ongoing insecurity, including the deadly March 29 attack in Angwan Rukuba, Jos North, where several residents were killed, sparking outrage and prompting a curfew and intensified security operations.

In the weeks since, violence has spread to areas such as Bokkos and Barkin Ladi, alongside reported kidnappings, including a recent case in Shendam where a victim was later rescued by troops.

Security agencies have stepped up operations, dismantling an illegal arms factory in Langtang North and intercepting weapons along the Kaduna–Jos highway in efforts to cut off supply chains fueling the violence. However, residents continue to call for stronger preventive measures, citing recurring attacks and delayed responses.

Addressing worshippers at the EYN Church in Jos, Governor Mutfwang urged unity among residents and warned against divisions that could worsen tensions. He noted that some displaced persons have begun returning home and called for collective efforts to rebuild trust within affected communities.

The governor also acknowledged the hardships faced by victims, particularly widows, and said his administration is working on targeted support initiatives.

A church leader, Joseph Kwaha, commended the government’s response to recent crises and encouraged continued efforts toward peace and reconciliation.

Meanwhile, the State Security Service has arrested four suspects linked to the Angwan Rukuba attack. The suspects were arraigned in court last week, but proceedings were adjourned due to the absence of defence counsel, with the court ordering their remand in custody.

Governor Mutfwang’s assurance follows recent engagements with security stakeholders and political leaders after President Bola Tinubu visited Plateau earlier this month, where federal authorities pledged to strengthen security and ensure justice for victims.
