Federal Government Awards N75,000 Bursary to Over 2,800 Education Students in Nigeria
The Federal Government under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu said a total of 2,889 students studying education-related courses in Nigerian higher institutions have benefited from the N75,000 bursary awards.
During the first quarterly meeting of the Federal Ministry of Education, Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman, announced that a total of 2,889 students pursuing education-related courses in Nigerian higher institutions have received N75,000 bursary awards.
The initiative, which was introduced in 2022, invited applications from eligible students enrolled in education programs at universities and colleges of education across the country.
In line with the government’s commitment to supporting education, Mamman revealed that students enrolled in degree programs in education at public universities are entitled to a N75,000 stipend per semester, while those pursuing the Nigeria Certificate in Education receive N50,000 per semester.
Providing further insight into the various scholarship programs, Mamman disclosed that 345 individuals have benefited from the Bilateral Education Agreement scholarship, with 51 recipients under the Commonwealth scholarship.
Additionally, 2,122 students have been awarded the Nigerian Scholarship Award, while 724 beneficiaries have participated in the Teachers Internship Scheme.
Addressing concerns about academic integrity, Mamman emphasized the government’s determination to tackle the issue of fake degree certificates. Following the submission of the investigative committee’s report on degree mills, security agencies will pursue individuals involved in the production and distribution of fraudulent credentials.
The establishment of the committee was prompted by an investigative report revealing the operations of degree mills, particularly in Benin Republic and Togo. The expose led to the prohibition of accreditation and evaluation of degrees from these countries and prompted scrutiny of private universities established in Nigeria over the past 15 years.
The quarterly engagement, spearheaded by Minister of State for Education, Tanko Sununu, aims to enhance transparency, accountability, and public trust in the education sector.
It provides a platform for stakeholders and citizens to engage with the ministry, fostering mutual understanding and promoting awareness of its activities.
