Adebayo Condemns Road Closures for APC Convention

The presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Prince Adewole Adebayo, has criticised the Federal Government over the temporary closure of major roads around the Federal Secretariat Complex and Eagle Square ahead of the national convention of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Adebayo described the action as an abuse of public office and an inappropriate use of government resources for partisan political activities. According to him, restricting movement and suspending physical work in government offices to accommodate a political party’s event undermines the neutrality expected of public institutions.

He argued that government facilities and official working hours should not be deployed to support political programmes, stressing that such actions blur the line between state responsibilities and party interests.

The criticism followed a directive from the Office of the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation announcing the temporary closure of roads leading to the Federal Secretariat Complex, Phases I, II and III, during the APC national convention scheduled to take place at Eagle Square.

Under the directive, civil servants working in affected offices were instructed to work remotely, while permanent secretaries and heads of ministries, departments, and agencies were asked to ensure full compliance with the work-from-home arrangement.

The road closures are expected to disrupt traffic flow and commercial activities within Abuja’s central business district, as commuters and businesses prepare for possible delays during the period of the convention.

The development has also reignited public debate over the use of government facilities for political gatherings and whether official government operations should be adjusted to accommodate partisan events.
