Arsenal Past Mansfield as Eze Fires Gunners Into FA Cup Quarter Finals

Arsenal secured a hardfought 2-1 victory over Mansfield Town to advance into the FA Cup quarter finals, thanks to a brilliant winner from Eberechi Eze. The clash at Field Mill tested the Gunners as League One opponents pushed them all the way.

Madueke Gives Arsenal Early Lead

The Londoners started strongly, with Noni Madueke opening the scoring after 30 minutes. Following a parried effort from the edge of the box, Madueke received a lay off from Martinelli and drilled the ball into the top corner, marking Arsenal’s 100th goal of the season across all competitions.

Despite the early lead, Mansfield responded with determination. The home side, buoyed by their recent FA Cup upset over Burnley, created several opportunities, including a long range effort from Tyler Roberts and a volley from Rhys Oates.

Mansfield Draw Level

The League One side levelled shortly after the restart. A misplaced pass from 16 years old Marli Salmon allowed Will Evans to seize possession, drive into the box, and slot past Kepa Arrizabalaga, sending the stadium into a frenzy.

Eze Restores Arsenal Lead

Manager Mikel Arteta made decisive substitutions, bringing on Eze and Jurrien Timber. Eze’s introduction proved decisive: he weaved past defenders outside the area and unleashed a powerful strike into the roof of the net to secure the win.

Arsenal also handed debuts to 18 year old defender Jaden Dixon and saw Bukayo Saka enter in the final minutes, helping the Gunners close out the game.

Youthful Impact

The match also highlighted Arsenal’s trust in youth. 16 year olds Max Dowman and Marli Salmon featured in the starting lineup, with Dowman becoming the club’s youngest ever FA Cup player at 16 years and 66 days. Both showed glimpses of their talent, creating opportunities and contributing to the team’s attacking play.

What’s Next

Arsenal now prepare for a busy schedule, beginning with an away Champions League Round of 16 first leg clash against Bayer Leverkusen in Germany on Wednesday. They return to the Premier League on Saturday to face Everton before welcoming Leverkusen for the second leg next Tuesday. The FA Cup quarter final draw is set for the first weekend of April.

This win marks Arsenal’s return to the FA Cup quarter finals for the first time since their trophy winning run in 2020, keeping alive their hopes of a record extending 15th FA Cup triumph.
