Hostile Attack on Police Personnel Results in Unfortunate Death of Civilian – Ismail Yunusa in Sheka Kano

According to the Press Release from the Kano State Command Police Public Relationship Officer Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa on, 26th February 2024 – Stated that The Kano Police Command regrets to announce a tragic incident that occurred on 25th February 2024 at approximately 1330hrs involving an attack on police personnel deployed from Sheka Division. The incident unfolded at some parts of Sheka Quarters, leading to the unfortunate death of one civilian, Ismail Yunusa.

Mohammed Rabiu of Sheka Dandurumi Quarters had initially lodged a complaint against Abba Muhammed, alleging a severe assault that left him with life-threatening injuries. In response, a police team was dispatched to apprehend the suspects. However, the situation took a violent turn as the alleged assailants launched a hostile attack on the police team, using stones and dangerous weapons to resist arrest.

To maintain order and prevent further escalation, the police used tear gas, leading to the dispersal of the crowd. Tragically, amid the chaos, Ismail Yunusa, aged 25, was allegedly affected by the tear gas and subsequently became incapacitated. He was rushed to Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries while receiving treatment.

The Kano Police Command expresses deep sorrow over the loss of life and extends heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of the deceased. Commissioner of Police Mohammed Usaini Gumel has ordered a discreet investigation into the incident to ascertain the facts surrounding the unfortunate death.

The Commissioner of Police appeals to the public for calm and urges against engaging in unprovoked acts of violence or hostility towards law enforcement officials. The police are committed to serving and protecting all sectors of society.

The Commissioner appreciates the understanding of the peace-loving people of the state and calls for continued cooperation.
