Kashim Shettima Arrives Ethiopia for 39th AU Summit
Vice-President Kashim Shettima has arrived in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, to represent President Bola Tinubu at the 39th Ordinary Session of the African Union Assembly, scheduled for February 14–15.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, disclosed this in a statement issued on Friday by Kimiebi Ebienfa, spokesperson of the ministry.
On arrival at Bole International Airport, the vice-president was received by Ethiopia’s Minister of Innovation and Technology, Dr. Belete Mola, and the State Minister of Foreign Affairs, Amb. Berhanu Tsegaye.
Also on hand to welcome him were Tuggar, the Head of the Nigerian Embassy in Addis Ababa, and other senior government officials.
Tuggar noted that Nigeria has recorded notable diplomatic and institutional gains that reinforce its leadership in promoting Africa’s economic integration.
Speaking at the recently concluded 48th Session of the Executive Council of the African Union, he highlighted the Council’s decision to grant Nigeria a permanent seat on the Board of the African Central Bank as a key outcome.
He described the move as a landmark achievement that reflects Nigeria’s strategic influence in shaping Africa’s financial system. The decision also extends Nigeria’s representation to the Board of the Technical Convergence Committee of the African Monetary Institute, a precursor to the African Central Bank.
According to him, these developments underscore Nigeria’s technical expertise, economic relevance, and commitment to advancing Africa’s monetary integration.
On peace and security matters, Tuggar said the session also saw the successful election of jointly endorsed candidates presented by the Economic Community of West African States, including Nigeria, to the Peace and Security Council.
