Breaking News: Court confirms Oyebanji as Governor of Ekiti, Segun Oni loses case in the Tribunal

The Election Petition Tribunal has upheld the election of Gov. Biodun Oyebanji of Ekiti State and his Deputy, Mrs. Monisade Afuye.

The Tribunal in its judgment on Thursday, December 29, 2022, in Ado -Ekiti dismissed the petition of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) governorship candidate, Mr. Segun Oni.

The judgment read by the Chairman, Justice Wilfred Kpochi, and a member of the Panel, Justice Sa’ad Zadawa, resolved all issues in contention against Oni and his party, SDP.

The Panel held that the petition filed by Oni against the return of Oyebanji and Afuye respectively, “failed woefully head or tail.”

Recall that result of the Ekiti governorship election on June 18, 2022, was challenged by the Social Democratic Party (SDP) candidate, Segun Oni.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had shortly after the election was concluded announced the APC candidate, Biodun Oyebanji as the winner of the poll.

Oyebanji scored 187,057 votes to defeat its closest rival, the SDP candidate Chief Segun Oni, which garnered 82,211 votes.

Not satisfied with the declaration by Chief Oni of SDP approached the governorship election petition tribunal, urging it to declare SDP winner having allegedly scored the highest number of valid votes.
