Kano Government Assures Imminent Resolution of Emirship Dispute

The Kano State Government has indicated that the protracted rivalry over the Kano Emirship may soon be resolved, following Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s recent defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya, disclosed on Thursday that concrete steps had been taken to restore lasting peace and stability in the state, suggesting that the long-standing “two emirs” situation was approaching an end.

For nearly two years, Kano has witnessed a traditional impasse, with Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II occupying the historic Gidan Rumfa palace, while Emir Aminu Ado Bayero holds court at the Nassarawa mini-palace.

Speaking during a programme on Muhasa, a local radio station in Kano monitored by Daily Trust, Waiya said the political alignment of the state and federal governments under the APC had removed major barriers to resolving the dispute.

“I assure you that very soon, the Kano State Government will resolve the issue of the Kano Emirate, because we are now united,” he said.

He further hinted that the resolution might involve voluntary decisions by the contenders themselves, noting that “some may choose to step down on their own, or others may seek reconciliation, as mutual understanding has been reached.”

The commissioner stressed that the administration is committed to engaging all relevant stakeholders through dialogue, adding that the matter would not be allowed to fuel tension or disrupt governance in the state.

“Our approach is anchored on respect for the rule of law, traditional institutions, and the collective interest of the people of Kano State,” Waiya said.

Commenting on Governor Yusuf’s defection to the APC, Waiya described the move as one that would bring significant benefits to the state. He said closer collaboration with the Federal Government would open up opportunities for increased support in key sectors such as infrastructure, healthcare, education and social welfare.

“The defection opens more doors for Kano. With stronger cooperation with the Federal Government, we expect more interventions that will positively impact the lives of our people,” he added.

Waiya also reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to what he described as the “Kano First” agenda, stressing that the state’s development must take precedence over personal or factional interests.

“Our priority is Kano. Any interest that conflicts with that objective will not be allowed to hinder governance,” he said.
