Kano Poets in Trouble Over Unauthorized Mukabala

Kano Government Summons Poets Over Unauthorized Contest

The Kano State Government has summoned two popular Hausa Islamic poets (sha’irai), Malam Usman Mai Dubun Isa and Malam Shehi Tajul’izzi, to appear before the state’s Film and Censorship Board within 24 hours over allegations of organizing a poetry contest without approval.

According to Arewa Updates reports that the Chairman of the Kano State Film and Censorship Board, Alhaji Abba El-Mustapha, disclosed this in a statement released on Tuesday, September 16, 2025, by the Board’s Public Relations Officer, Abdullahi Sani Sulaiman.

According to the statement, the poetry contest violated the Board’s regulations, prompting the establishment of an investigative committee under the leadership of the Director of Special Duties, Malam Isha Abdullahi. The committee is tasked with conducting a thorough inquiry and summoning all stakeholders involved.

The Board stressed that organizing such contests without authorization contravenes existing laws, and appropriate action will be taken against anyone found guilty of breaching the regulations.
