Just In: Abuja Residents Break into Government Warehouse, Steal Foodstuff and Supplies Amid Continued Hardship
In a startling turn of events, residents have broken into a government warehouse in Abuja, seizing food supplies and other essentials as the specter of hardship looms large.
Some residents of Abuja, the nation’s capital has looted a warehouse reportedly belonging to the National Emergency Management Agency of Nigeria (NEMA) over the current economic hardship across the country.
According to report, the residents broke into the warehouse located around Tasha area of the community around 7 am on Sunday, looting bags of maize and grain.
A resident, Jaafar Aminu, speaking to Daily Trust said the looting continued unhindered till 9 am, adding that some residents as well as persons from neighboring Jiwa and Karmo town trooped towards the site with the intention of partaking in the loot
He further said the situation has caused a grid lock on Gwagwa-Karmo road, that leads to Dei-Dei and Jabi axis, respectively.
Another resident, Christopher Agbo,said the looters did not spare even protectors used to barricade the site as they picked anything deemed useful from the warehouse.
The spokesperson for the FCT Police Command, Josephine Adeh, confirmed the incident saying the security agencies have been deployed to the warehouse and the situation is now under control.
“The situation is now under control,” she said.
Many Nigerians have been lamenting hardship following the removal of fuel subsidy and the devaluation of the naira after it was floated by President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
The economic policies of the administration have pushed up the prices of goods drastically and rate of inflation.
On Friday, hoodlums have attacked a BUA truck loaded with cartons of spaghetti at the Dogarawa axis of the Zaria-Kano expressway.
According to an eyewitness, the driver had parked the truck by the roadside to observe prayers when the hoodlums struck, looting all the cartons of spaghetti before fleeing the scene.
This incident underscores the growing desperation among the populace amidst ongoing economic challenges.
