Tinubu Mourns Former Super Eagles Coach Festus Onigbinde

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of former Super Eagles head coach and renowned football administrator, Festus Adegboye Onigbinde, who died on Monday at the age of 88.
In a condolence message released by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President extended heartfelt sympathies to the family, friends, and associates of the late Modakeke high chief. He also commiserated with the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), the National Sports Commission (NSC), and the entire Nigerian football community over the loss of one of the country’s most respected football figures.
President Tinubu described Onigbinde as a pioneer whose contributions played a significant role in shaping the development of football in Nigeria. He noted that the late coach made history in 1982 when he was appointed as the first indigenous coach of the Super Eagles, a milestone that paved the way for greater local participation in coaching and football administration in the country.
Under Onigbinde’s leadership, the national team reached the final of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in 1984, an achievement that further strengthened Nigeria’s reputation in African football. His tenure with the team was widely regarded as a period marked by discipline, tactical awareness, and the promotion of local talent.
Beyond his role with the national team, Onigbinde was known for his strong commitment to grassroots football development. Throughout his career, he advocated for structured youth development programmes and better organisation of football administration in Nigeria. Many players and administrators credit his mentorship and guidance as key influences in their careers.
The President praised the late football icon for his enduring dedication to the growth of the sport and his reputation as a man of integrity and vision. According to Tinubu, Onigbinde’s legacy extends beyond trophies and competitions, as he helped nurture a culture of professionalism and discipline within Nigerian football.
“High Chief Festus Onigbinde will always be remembered for his passion for football, his leadership, and his unwavering commitment to the development of the game in Nigeria,” the President said.
Tinubu prayed for the peaceful repose of the late coach’s soul and asked God to grant strength and comfort to his family, friends, and the entire Nigerian football community during this period of mourning.
Onigbinde’s passing has drawn tributes from across the sports community, with many describing him as one of the pioneers who helped lay the foundation for modern Nigerian football. His legacy, they say, will continue to inspire future generations of players, coaches, and administrators in the country.
