Bandits Attack Market in Dogon Ruwa, Plateau State — Six Abducted, One Killed, Shops Looted
Dogon Ruwa, Wase LGA, Plateau State

The Dogon Ruwa community in Bashar Chiefdom of Wase Local Government Area, Plateau State, was thrown into mourning on Monday following a brazen midday attack by armed bandits. The assailants stormed the popular local market during peak trading hours, killing one person, abducting at least six others, and looting shops.
Eyewitnesses say the attackers, who rode into the town on motorcycles, fired sporadically to disperse traders and customers, causing widespread panic and chaos. “They came around 11 a.m., shooting into the air and heading straight for the market,” said Shapi’i Sambo, a youth leader in Wase. “They abducted five shop owners and carted away goods and food items like rice, flour, and medicines.”
Among the victims of the tragic incident was Alhaji Sani Alhaji Dabo, who was reportedly killed during the assault. A young child was also seriously injured. Community members said this is one of the most devastating attacks in recent memory, as the market serves as a hub for traders from neighboring communities.
Beyond the abductions, the bandits looted dozens of shops and business centers, leaving many traders devastated. Several families are now living in fear, unsure of the fate of their loved ones.
Efforts to get an official response from Operation Safe Haven, the joint military task force stationed in the area, were unsuccessful as at press time. However, sources confirm that local security personnel and vigilante groups have been mobilized to pursue the attackers.
Over the last two years, Dogon Ruwa and neighboring communities such as Kampani Zurak have faced repeated attacks despite the presence of security forces. Residents have accused both state and local authorities of negligence, and allege that some political figures are exploiting the insecurity for political advantage.
In a strongly worded statement, community leaders condemned the killings and called on the Federal Government, the National Security Adviser, and security chiefs to take urgent and coordinated action to dismantle bandit networks operating in Wase and Kanam LGAs.
“Enough is enough,” the statement read. “We call on the Presidency and security agencies to launch decisive military operations in these areas. The Plateau State Government must also support victims and enhance local security structures to prevent further bloodshed.”
The attack has sparked renewed calls for community policing, improved collaboration among security agencies, and sustained efforts to end the wave of violence that continues to plague rural communities in Plateau State.
As the search for the abducted victims continues, families in Dogon Ruwa and surrounding communities remain hopeful that government intervention will bring lasting peace to the region.
