Bauchi Islamic Scholars Reject Terrorism Allegations, Affirm State’s Commitment to Peace and Security

Islamic scholars and leaders in Bauchi State have firmly rejected allegations linking the Bauchi State Government and its people to terrorism and banditry, describing the claims as false, misleading and contrary to the realities on ground.

In a joint statement issued on Friday, the Muslim community in Bauchi State, comprising various Islamic groups and represented by Imam Muhammad Yusuf Adam on behalf of the Imams, said it was necessary to clarify their position in line with Islamic principles of truth and justice. Citing the Qur’an, the scholars stressed the obligation to speak truthfully, especially on issues capable of causing public unrest.

The scholars noted that Bauchi State remains one of the most peaceful states in Northern Nigeria, with relatively low levels of criminality. They pointed out that the prevailing peace and security have attracted people from other states to relocate to Bauchi, particularly the state capital, where many have built homes and established livelihoods. According to them, the influx of residents has even led to the creation of new settlements, including Maraban Liman Katagum, New Nabordo and New Narabi, where the state government has resettled people displaced by insecurity from neighbouring states.

Addressing the allegations directly, the scholars stated that there is no town or forest in Bauchi State serving as a base for terrorists or bandits, nor any area inaccessible due to the strength or protection of criminal groups. They added that no individual or group has ever been arrested in the state with weapons or food supplies meant for bandits in hideouts.

The statement further highlighted the Bauchi State Government’s prompt response to security threats whenever they arise. Examples cited include the provision of equipment, funds and vehicles by Governor Bala Mohammed to security agencies and vigilante groups combating banditry, the swift intervention when bandits appeared in Duguri, Alkaleri Local Government Area, and the Governor’s directive to Imams and scholars to intensify special prayers for peace across the state.

The scholars maintained that no bandit group in Bauchi State has overpowered security agencies or the government, attributing this to divine intervention and the proactive efforts of the Governor. They stressed that Governor Bala Mohammed has no direct or indirect relationship with bandits and has never ignored reports of criminal activity. According to them, there is no bandit hideout in the state that security agencies have avoided due to any alleged protection from the government.

On the issue of Bello Badejo, the scholars clarified that his relationship with the Governor was strictly in the context of cooperation on security matters and not connected to banditry or criminal activities.

In their appeals, the Islamic leaders called on the public to disregard false narratives aimed at tarnishing reputations and warned against the spread of fabricated stories. They also urged politicians to ensure that political rivalry does not lead to harm against innocent individuals or destabilise the peace of the state.

The scholars described allegations against the Bauchi State Commissioner of Finance and five other government officials as baseless, noting that the individuals are widely known for good character and peaceful conduct. They called for their release to enable them return to their families and continue serving the state.

In conclusion, the Islamic scholars asserted that the people of Bauchi State are best placed to judge the actions and character of their Governor, having lived under his administration. They prayed for sustained peace in the state, justice for those currently detained, and continued divine support for the Governor in his efforts toward development and security.

The statement was signed by Imam Muhammad Yusuf Adam, on behalf of the Imams of Bauchi State.
