Bauchi State Government Condemns Political Misuse of Anti-Corruption Institutions

Bauchi, 31st December 2025 — The Bauchi State Government has expressed deep concern over recent actions by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) involving the arrest, detention, and prosecution of the Commissioner of Finance and Economic Development, as well as senior officials of the State Civil Service. The Government also decries attempts to implicate the Governor of Bauchi State through insinuations and repeated references in the charge sheet.

The Government stresses that the officials acted within the bounds of the law, carrying out their constitutional and statutory responsibilities in accordance with established financial regulations and valid approvals. “Criminalising routine governance functions is tantamount to criminalising government itself, threatening public administration across the federation,” the statement reads.

The Bauchi State Government raises serious concerns about the belated introduction of allegations related to terrorism financing and money laundering, which were absent at the time of arrest and only surfaced after judicial scrutiny. No terrorist organization or act has been linked, and no credible evidence has been disclosed to justify such grave accusations. The timing and manner of these allegations suggest they were introduced to intimidate, scandalise, and politically damage reputations, rather than serve justice.

The Government also refutes claims that the Accountant-General of the State was “at large.” The official complied with the EFCC’s invitation, was detained, and released on bail after meeting all conditions.

Although the Governor is not an accused person, his name has been repeatedly mentioned in ways that attempt to conduct a trial in the court of public opinion, violating his constitutional immunity. The addition of terrorism related allegations is seen as a deliberate attempt to politically tarnish the Governor’s image.
Governor Bauchi has an impeccable record of public service, including tenure as a civil servant, Senator, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, and twice elected Governor. Throughout his career, he has upheld transparency, inclusiveness, and peaceful governance.

The Government emphasizes that any threats to the safety of the Governor, his staff, or their families are unacceptable. Bauchi State remains committed to transparency, accountability, and anti-corruption, but stresses that these must be evidence based and impartial.

The Government urges federal authorities, particularly the Office of the Attorney General of the Federation, to review EFCC’s conduct, ensure compliance with constitutional safeguards, and expunge the Governor’s name from all charge sheets.
Bauchi State remains peaceful, united, and focused on governance, affirming its commitment to defend the Constitution, uphold democratic norms, and resist any attempts to undermine the will and dignity of its people.
