Enugu Checkpoint Ambush: Two Officers Killed as Gunmen Raze Police Vehicle

ENUGU, Nigeria — A renewed wave of violence targeting security formations in Enugu State has claimed the lives of two police officers. The tragedy occurred late Thursday night when unidentified gunmen launched a coordinated attack on a police checkpoint near the Police College along Agbani Road.
The Attack and Immediate Aftermath The assault, which began at approximately 8:42 p.m., triggered widespread panic as the metropolis was rocked by intense gunfire.
Residents and passersby were forced to flee for safety as the assailants opened fire on officers and set a police operational vehicle ablaze before making their escape.
Police Statement State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Daniel Ndukwe, confirmed the unprovoked attack. He stated that while the police team responded swiftly—forcing the gunmen to retreat with suspected gunshot wounds—two officers sustained critical injuries during the exchange. Both were rushed to a nearby hospital, where they were tragically confirmed dead.
Recovered Evidence Following the shootout, police recovered a Lexus 330 SUV used by the attackers. The vehicle, which had been previously snatched from its owner, was found riddled with bullet holes from the confrontation.
Official Directive In response to the killings, the State Commissioner of Police, CP Bitrus Giwa, has ordered an immediate and intensive manhunt. The CP has directed operatives to utilize all available resources and actionable intelligence to track down and arrest the fleeing suspects to ensure they face the full weight of the law.
