Lagos State Government Warns Unregistered Private Schools to Comply Immediately

Lagos Government Issues Ultimatum to Unregistered Private Schools: Register Now or Face Sanctions

The Lagos State Government has issued a stern warning to all private schools operating without approval or registration in the state, urging them to comply immediately with registration requirements at the Office of Education Quality Assurance (OEQA).

The directive, announced by the Honourable Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Mr. Jamiu Tolani Alli-Balogun, is part of efforts to enforce standards across all educational institutions below tertiary level and ensure learners receive quality education.

The Coordinating Director of OEQA, Mr. Remi Abdul, emphasized that the state government will no longer tolerate unregistered private schools, as their operations undermine the state’s commitment to excellence in education. Abdul stated that the proliferation of private schools in Lagos necessitates strict registration processes to allow for effective monitoring and intervention.

Applications for registration are to be submitted starting January 13, 2025, at the OEQA office in Alausa, Ikeja. School proprietors who fail to comply risk sanctions, including possible closure.

The Lagos State Government highlighted the benefits of registration, which include state recognition, access to technical and financial support, and regular updates on new policies and initiatives from the state and federal education ministries.

This move underscores the government’s commitment to ensuring that every learner in Lagos has access to quality education. Parents are also advised to verify the accreditation status of schools before enrolling their children.

The state government has urged proprietors of private schools to take immediate action to avoid disruptions to their operations. The registration process, according to the OEQA, will be seamless and efficient to accommodate all stakeholders.
