Police Arrest Three Suspects Over Killing of Mother, Six Children in Kano

The Kano State Police Command has arrested three suspects in connection with the gruesome killing of a woman and her six children at Dorayi Chiranchi Quarters in Kano metropolis.

The arrest followed the brutal attack on the household of Haruna Bashir on Saturday, January 17, 2026, when unidentified assailants reportedly stormed the residence at about 12:10 p.m. and killed seven members of the family.

Confirming the development on Sunday, the Police Public Relations Officer in Kano State, CSP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, said the arrests were carried out on the directive of the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, under the supervision of the Commissioner of Police in the state, Ibrahim Adamu Bakori.

According to the police, intelligence-led operations led to the arrest of the suspected masterminds identified as Umar Auwalu, 23, of Sabuwar Gandu Quarters; Isyaku Yakubu, also known as “Chebe,” 40, of Sagagi Quarters; and Yakubu Abdulaziz, popularly called “Wawo,” 21, of Sabon Gida Sharada Quarters, all in Kano.

CSP Kiyawa disclosed that the suspects were apprehended during a targeted sting operation conducted between 10:00 p.m. on January 17 and 4:00 a.m. on January 18, shortly after the incident was reported.

Police investigations revealed that the leader of the syndicate, Umar Auwalu, is a nephew of the deceased woman. He reportedly confessed to the crime and admitted that the same group had carried out a series of violent attacks in the past, including the killing and burning of two housewives at Tudun Yola Quarters in November last year.

During the operation, the police recovered several items linking the suspects to the crime, including four blood-stained clothes, two mobile phones belonging to the deceased, a cutlass, a club (gora), and an undisclosed amount of money allegedly stolen from the house.

The command said investigation into the incident is ongoing, adding that more arrests may be made as the probe progresses.

“The Kano State Police Command commends the efforts of the officers involved in the operation and appreciates members of the public for their prayers, support, and cooperation,” CSP Kiyawa said, assuring residents that the police remain committed to bringing all perpetrators of violent crimes to justice.
